Luis bridge, side by side to the traces of the old Pencil bridge located in the place where a famous boats? bridge collapsed under the weight of the people of the city fleeing from the French troops during the 2nd French Invasion of Portugal, in the beginning of the 19th Century.
Oporto, perched on the, right-bank of the Douro river, is dominated by the Torre dos Clerigos (18th century), built in the Baroque style. Other monuments are the Cathedral, the Church of Sao Francisco and the Palacio da Bolsa, with is fabulous Salao Arabe (Arab Room). To the south of the river, are to be found the cellars where you can taste the famous port wine.
