What to see in Trapani: Located on the western coast of Sicily, Trapani is a famous fishing and ferry port with a long history. Nowadays the town is renowned for its fine seafood and Sicilian cuisine, and makes a good base for tourists exploring this part of Sicily.

The town was a Phoenician trading port, ideally placed for commerce with Africa, Naples and the western Mediterranean. Trapani was an important town throughout the Middle Ages, and it is the medieval phase of the town's past which is most evident in the old town. Old palaces, beautiful churches, cluster along the promontory around the central Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Out at the tip of Trapani's headland is the Torre del Ligny, a tower which was part of the 17th-century Spanish defenses and now hosts a Prehistoric Museum. A stroll around the largely-pedestrianized old town gives travelers a chance to admire the town's old buildings and landmarks such as the offshore fortress called the Torre della Colombaia or Sea Castle

Other attractions and events: There are several interesting churches in Trapani, including the town's restored cathedral, the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo which, despite its later Baroque makeover, dates to the fourteenth century. The excitingly-named Chiesa del Purgatorio is the home of the sculptures which are carried through Trapani during the town's famous Misteri procession on Easter week. On Holy Friday these twenty wooden statues, known as the Misteri, are carried through the streets by robed citizens. A bus trip into the modern part of town will take you to two more of Trapani's tourist attractions, the 'Santuario dell'Annunziata' and the adjacent 'Museo Regionale Pepoli'. The town's main tourist information office, where you can find information and advice on these and other sights, is located in the old town near the port in an ancient building in liberty style called “Casina delle palme”. Trapani, is designed to make the heart beat a little faster.

Travel Tips From Trapani Airport, Sicily: Like everything Italian, there is a fundamental sense of romance in Trapani, from the antiquated architecture to the breath-taking coastlines. Even the local cuisine, including rich, creamy pastries and exquisitely seasoned, seafood dishes, manage to evoke a sense of wonderment and of life being full embraced. For those who like to explore, there are monuments and archaeological sites galore and even a spattering of windmills dotted throughout the fertile countryside to browse.

From Trapani-Birgi Airport, taxi's have a journey time of around 20 minutes into the city centre and cost approximately EUR30. Alternatively you can pre-book a Trapani Airport transfer or a seat on a Trapani Shuttle Bus which is quite cheap and frequent. It takes you right to the center and the nearest bus stop, at the port, is just few steps away from the apartment. We use to wait for our guest at the bus stop and take them to the flat, at any time!
